Conference: Numbers and Stories: New Directions for Climate Storylines and Scenarios, Polimi, 21 June 2023.
Venue: Politecnico di Milano, Aula 16.B.1.1 (first floor), Via Bonardi 9.
The theme of the workshop revolves around the use of qualitative and quantitative methods in climate change research, most importantly the development and use of scenarios for emission and decarbonization pathways, the storyline approach to detection and attribution of extreme weather events, and their repercussions for climate policy under deep uncertainty. Scenarios are key tools for depicting future climate and play a key role in assessments such as those of the IPCC. As the community looks forward to developing the next generation of scenarios, it is important to discuss which elements should be included in the narrative and operationalized in the qualitative and quantitative assessments. The workshop is planned as a full-day event with individual talks on Storylines in the morning and Scenarios/Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) in the afternoon. We will end with a panel discussion focused on the recent AR6 IPCC report with invited panellists, speakers and the organizing/scientific committee. In this seminar, organised in collaboration with STS Italia (the Italian Society for Science and Technology Studies), Michele Loi (philosopher, Politecnico di Milano) and Francesco Miele (sociologist, Università di Trieste) will discuss with Henriette Langstrup (University of Copenhagen) the role of individual users and forms of resistance against algorithmic control, with a particular focus on diabetes patients.

L’Intelligenza Artificiale (IA) sta entrando in maniera sempre più pervasiva nel flusso della vita quotidiana delle persone. Questo semplice fatto, prima ancora dei molteplici motivi di rischio e preoccupazione che essa porta con sé, ne fa emergere la dimensione politica, la sua rilevanza nel determinare la vita collettiva e i destini delle persone. Perciò la questione di una visione e gestione politica dell’IA è divenuta ormai urgente. L’evento “Una politica per l’IA” organizzato da META, l’Unità di studi umanistici e sociali su scienza e tecnologia del Politecnico di Milano, intende far dialogare ricercatrici e ricercatori italiani di rilevanza internazionale con la comunità politecnica e la cittadinanza per condividere alcune riflessioni urgenti sulla dimensione politica dell’Intelligenza Artificiale, sul suo impatto nella vita quotidiana, sulle forme di regolamentazione, così come su come sia possibile rendere l’IA una tecnologia pienamente democratica.

In this workshop, we will discuss questions of fairness pertaining to machine learning applications in the health domain. Our goal is to explore the philosophical and moral plausibility of data – driven evaluations of fairness in this domain, to highlight the moral trade-offs between contrasting moral objectives, moral perspectives, and formal definitions of bias and fairness in the machine learning debate. This conference, which is organized by the Irvine-London-Munich-PoliMi-Salzburg network, aims to bring together philosophers, physicists, and mathematicians working on such issues.

Technological innovation can lead to the emergence of important ethical, social, and scientific issues: understanding them requires moving beyond disciplinary barriers and integrating expertise from engineering, the humanities, and the social sciences. This workshop presents three critical studies, made possible by collaboration between the Fondazione Silvio Tronchetti Provera and the Politecnico di Milano, which investigate the development and use of emerging technologies by integrating insights from mechanical, biomedical, and management engineering with approaches from ethics, philosophy of science, and the social sciences. Le fake news sono divenute un problema socialmente rilevante negli ultimi anni, sempre più spesso oggetto di notizia giornalistica o commento politico. La questione riguarda direttamente anche il mondo della scienza e della tecnologia, che soffre di una crisi di autorevolezza di medio periodo accentuatasi con la nascita di movimenti collettivi a sostegno di teorie che la scienza ufficiale considera del tutto inattendibili (no vax, terrapiattisti ecc.). A metà strada tra le leggende metropolitane e le bufale scientifiche di una volta, le fake news scientifiche odierne si basano fortemente sullo strumento dei social media ma fanno presa come mai prima d’ora sulla credulità e sulla volontà di attivarsi del pubblico generico.Il META Debate “La scienza in-credibile” vuole affrontare il problema attuale delle fake news scientifiche mettendo a confronto scienziati, scienziati sociali ed esperti dei media per discutere delle regioni e dei meccanismi della loro diffusione, nonché delle strategie per limitarne l’impatto.

Workshop: Dismantling boundaries between STS and Design: A workshop on RRI and assessment practices in co-creation landscapes, PoliMi, November 20, 2019

The development and introduction of new technologies within our turbulent society is crucial in solving and shaping challenges in equal measure. In this regard, the concept of co-creation has been recently introduced in diverse fields as a way to engage lay people and stakeholders in the ideation, implementation and assessment of innovative solutions to societal challenges, by embracing a sensitiveness towards their (ethical) acceptability, sustainability and societal desirability. As pointed out by scholars engaged in Science & Technology Studies and design, co-creation has the potentiality to become a novel constitutive driver for performing Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), with the overall expectation of increasing the societal value of science and technology, not only by striving to manage unwanted consequences. The workshop, by offering the opportunity to STS and design international scholars to interact with practitioners engaged in co-creation initiatives, will be an opportunity to reflect on emerging practices of assessing the translation of RRI practice within co-creation initiatives. Workshop: Assertion and Proof (WAP 2019), Lecce, September 12-14, 2019
The theme of the workshop is the notion of assertion and its logical treatment. We aim to bring together scholars interested in the analysis of the logical notion of assertion and other related notions such as inference, proof, argument, meaning of logical constants that may receive an assertion-based interpretation. Following the 2016 workshop How to Say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’: Logical Approaches to Modes of Assertion and Denial, in the present workshop we will analyse the inferential role of assertion, often assumed as the external counterpart of the internal act of judgement, and its relations with the notion of proof. The Call for Papers provides the background, research questions, and instructions to submit your abstract. There will be a special issue of Journal of Applied Logics – IfCoLoG Journal of Logics and their Applications with selected contributions. Promoted by the Charles S. Conference: Analogical Reasoning in Science and Mathematics, Munich, October 26-28, 2018
Analogy is a powerful, yet controversial, tool of scientific reasoning. Indeed, many achievements in the history of science and mathematics have been driven by analogical inferences. Moreover, one can formulate conjectures about domains into which one does not have empirical access just based on analogy with other known domains. Nonetheless, from a logical point of view analogical inferences do not yield conclusions with certainty. So, what is that justifies the use of analogy in science and mathematics? And how reliable is analogical reasoning? This conference, taking place at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy and supported by the Humboldt Foundation and META at the Politecnico di Milano, addresses such open philosophical problems. This one-day workshop, which is jointly organized by META and the PhD course “Communicating Scientific Research” at the Politecnico di Milano, surveys the issue of how theoretical and applied work in philosophy and mathematics, as well as the mutual interaction between these disciplines, can actively contribute to the advancement of medical research. Speakers include Alfio Quarteroni (PoliMi) “Matematica in Medicina: ricercare, applicare, comunicare”; and Giovanni Boniolo (Ferrara) “Why should we put more ph into a scientific PhD?”.

Research in science and technology does not usually address the ethical and social consequences of its own accomplishments. Such issues are rather entrusted to politics, philosophy, and social sciences. However, funding agencies and political institutions are increasingly requesting research to address ethical issues and the societal impact of research projects. Throughout the scientific communities it is becoming clear that the awareness of ethical and social issues inherent in technological development improves research itself in science and technology.
