Idea League Ethics Working Group

IDEA League is a focused network of leading European universities of science and technology.

The IDEA League is a focused and collaborative network of leading European technological universities, including TU Delft, RWTH Aachen, ETH Zurich, Chalmers University, and the Politecnico di Milano.

Each institution has a respected research-oriented profile and is the largest producer of engineering and science graduates in its own country. One of the IDEA League’s main ambitions is to re-establish Europe as a global leader in scientific research and technological development through the pooling of academic resources and knowledge. Collaborative activities in education, research, and quality assurance, as well as joint participation in EU programs and initiatives make the IDEA League a model for European integration and cooperation.

META contributes to the IDEA League by coordinating the Idea League Ethics Working Group, which aims at sharing experiences and best practices in regard to ethical and societal issues both in technological research and education.

Irvine-London-Munich-PoliMi-Salzburg Network

The Irvine-Munich-PoliMi-Salzburg network for work in philosophy and the foundations of physics seeks to foster collaboration between faculty, researchers, and students based in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California Irvine, the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method at the London School of Economics, the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, the Department of Mathematics and the META group at the Politecnico di Milano, and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Salzburg.

The activities of this network include the circulation of scholars among the five institutions, the organization of regular workshops on dedicated topics, and an annual international conference for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Through joint applications for external funding, the network also supports the career development of young researchers from around the world.

MIT-PoliMi Program for Early Career Researchers

Ethical and social issues of technologies

The MIT-PoliMi Program aims to provide select early-career researchers from both institutions with a strong awareness of the ethical and social issues that surround emerging technologies. To achieve this goal, a highly interdisciplinary training is offered that integrates technological expertise with critical approaches and tools from the humanities and the social sciences, especially philosophy and sociology. The program is offered as a masterclass, and participants spend 2-3 weeks at the Politecnico di Milano and 2-3 weeks at MIT in order to create a close-knit group that can profit from sharing experiences and peer-to-peer learning.

In addition to the masterclass activities, participants can also attend existing PhD courses and enjoy individual support.
