The debate about research on dual-use technologies still has several gaps to be filled, especially when its focus shifts from dual-use technologies in general to dual-use technologies in academic research in particular – which is precisely the objective of our workshop.
Through a strongly interdisciplinary approach, the workshop brings together voices from both the world of institutions and, especially, the world of academic research to address engineering, legal and ethical puzzles arising from dual-use technologies in academic research itself. On the one hand, the workshop focuses on issues concerning academic research starting with (but not limited to) aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, cybersecurity, mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering. On the other hand, the workshop focuses on issues concerning the relationship between academic researchers and the various facets of their work, starting with (but not limited to) international research networks, partnerships with governments, partnerships with industries, teaching and student supervision.
