On the occasion of Jacob Stegenga’s visit to Politecnico, META will hold a book symposium to discuss his recently published monograph Heart of Science: A Philosophy of Scientific Inquiry (The University of Chicago Press, 2026).

The book presents a new epistemology of science focused on the justification of knowledge, rather than its achievement, and the attainment of the special kind of truth which is common knowledge, a broadly shared and mutually justified scientific finding. As such the book breaks with traditional views that focus on the end products of science, rather than its processes, and, drawing on both historical examples and recent events like the COVID-19 pandemic, presents a compelling framework to address science communication and public trust.

The symposium will start with an introduction by Daniele Chiffi, followed by a short overview of the book by Jacob Stefenga and commentaries by Stefano Canal, Mara Floris, and Giacomo Zanotti and a Q&A session open to the audience.
