Artificial Intelligence & Human Autonomy Philosophical Explorations

Date: August 8, 2024 Time: h. 09.00 – 11.00 Venue: CUOO2 Giurisprudenza Aula VII, University La Sapienza, Rome

In this roundtable, organized by Meta as a part of WCP 2024 The XXV World Congress of Philosophy, Sofia Bonicalzi (University of Roma Tre), Simona Tiribelli (University of Macerata), Radu Uszkai (University of Bucharest), and Fabio Fossa (Politecnico di Milano) will discuss how different technologies, such as recommender systems, biomedical applications, automated vehicles, and social robots, significantly impact human autonomy, reframing its characteristics and affecting its scope in multifarious ways.

Nowadays, interactions between artificial and human agents invite us to reassess the conceptual foundations of autonomy as a philosophical notion, shedding new light on key phenomena such as influence, manipulation, coercion, and deception. The moral imperative to protect and promote the value of human autonomy in practical contexts where AI systems are adopted calls for critical reflections on the practices of design, deployment, use, and regulation. This round table intends to put together researchers working on the intersection between artificial intelligence systems and human autonomy from both theoretical and ethical, conceptual and applied perspectives. It aims at crossing scholarship boundaries by sharing insights across discussions on different AI systems and building bridges across diverse research approaches.
